Wenqing Tan is a Vancouver-based artist currently in her fourth year of the BFA Visual Arts program at Emily Carr University of Art + Design. Working primarily in oil painting, she chooses painting not because of its historical prestige or medium-specific discourse, but because its process allows her to experience a sense of home and companionship.

 

Born into a complex relationship with her place of origin in China, Wenqing feels both attachment and distance. She cherishes the food, gardens, and fragments of everyday memory associated with Anhui and Suzhou, while resisting the educational expectations and social atmosphere that shaped her early life. Her move to Vancouver became an escape from a predetermined model of success and the beginning of a different way of living and making art.

 

Her practice continually reflects on the relationship between self and environment within the context of multiple cultures. Rather than pursuing a fixed identity, she is interested in the idea of the ongoing subject—a self that remains in process, unsettled, and continuously becoming.

 

Her paintings return repeatedly to overlooked places: garbage sites, caves, abandoned rose gardens, and her own studio. Beginning intuitively, she builds each painting through direct collage-like decisions on the canvas instead of following predetermined compositions. These spaces gradually become places she herself would like to inhabit, or unfinished thoughts that continue beyond the edge of the painting.

 

Repetitive, delicate gestures are central to her process. They function not only as painterly marks but also as a way of quieting the echoes in her mind, allowing painting to become both an act of reflection and a place of return.
